Flydon Stud

A brief History

"....... a conscientious breeder does not simply mate one animal to another in curiosity, no matter how good each individual mare or stallion may be. We believe that breeders who have a lasting impact on the Welsh World practice long-term planning and patience....... We salute those of you around the globe who stick to your convictions and uphold time-tested ideals. Market fads may come and go, but the authentic article will remain the last animal standing. "

 Zachary Sheilds, Sangamon Stud, USA

Established in 1972, the breeding at Flydon has never been done on guess work. The aim was to concentrate on the two famous blood lines of Coed Coch Planed and Clan Pip by close line-breeding and therefore line-breeding to the great Coed Coch Glyndwr.

Our first foundation mare was Gredington Drysores (pronounced Dresoris), many times a champion and a typical Planed mare from an outstanding female line.  Drysores was with us for nearly 20 years and we have 22 descendants still within the stud.

In 1977 we had the huge stroke of luck that enabled us to purchase the legendary Clan Pip, the stallion we had planned to cover Drysores with. At this time we also purchased Llanerch Delight, purely for her bloodlines and especially to mate with Clan pip. Her sire Clan Dubail and Pip's grandsire Clan Dana were full brothers, both by Coed Coch Glyndwr. Delight's dam, Sickle was herself line bred to Coed Coch Madog. Delight and Clan Pip gave us a son, our  famous Flydon Henri ap Pip, and a daughter, Flydon Cornpoppy who is the dam of our second most successful  stallion, Flydon Caradog. Clan Pip died in 1981, the week Henri was born. Drysores, although she had an extremely good daughter by Clan Pip, F. Crackling Rosie, was more successfully mated to Henri, producing the sisters Heulwen and Elonwy.

Since losing Clan Pip but gaining Henri , we have continued to line breed to Coed Coch Glyndwr by bringing in new lines. The most successful of which to date have been through Verdrefawr Pipsen, by Clan Pip; Polaris Harebell, by Nerwyn Peledryn and Nerwyn Cadno, by Coed Coch Barrog
